Local Group Runs Relay to Help Homeless, Raise Awareness

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A 300-plus mile trip to New York City — all on foot.

A local group is running a relay from Virginia Beach to the Big Apple — all with hopes of raising awareness, and help, for the homeless. This is the ninth-annual run that will reach the World Trade Center to raise awareness for the homeless to exercise and get on nutritious programs to build confidence.

Jim White started LIFT after his beach boot camp attracted homeless individuals on the boardwalk wanting to join in. This ignited a passion to serve those in need through fitness and wellness education.

Local Foundation Hosts Relay from DC to Help the Homeless

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A local foundation is getting ready to host its 6th Annual White House to White House relay to bring awareness to the homeless and hunger crisis.

The relay, which starts in Washington D.C. and ends in Virginia Beach, is inspired by Jim White who operates the LIFT Fitness Foundation. White’s goal is to bring attention to homelessness so that it is not swept under the rug.

Students help the underserved get healthy through LIFT program

Whether an avid walker or more comfortable on the couch, everyone inside this gym is an athlete.

That’s because they’re all participants in the EVMS service-learning program LIFT, part of a partnership with Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studio in Virginia Beach.

The studio launched the LIFT Fitness Foundation to provide fitness, nutrition and job placement training to the homeless and those in need.

“We would hold training events across Hampton Roads,” Jim White says, “and people regularly approached us wanting to participate, but they didn’t have the money. When people are living paycheck to paycheck and trying to make ends meet, eating healthy and joining

“What population needs it the most more than the homeless,” said White.

White started the Lift Fitness Foundation in 2010 to help the homeless community build healthy fitness and nutritional habits.

I love a good race! I can’t even count how many races I’ve run in Virginia Beach over the years.

I’m highly competitive. It’s all about the finishing time and beating my personal record.

I’ve recently come across a race titled “White House 2 White House.” The presidential name caught my attention. The clever namesake describes the route, which starts from the Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studio in Virginia Beach (Jim White’s house) to the official White House.
